Excitement looms as I prepare to take my mother, Toniette Blackburn, and 10-year old nephew, Blake Blackburn, to DC next week.
Growing up in an airline family I have been fortunate enough to travel the world. My eyes have seen the world's amazing depth and breadth. But on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 my eyes will witness an event that will touch individuals world wide. I am grateful beyond words to be attending Barack Obama's Presidential Inauguration and even more grateful that I will share this experience with my mom and Blake.
Blake is a 5th grader from Keller, Texas. He covets history lessons and can likely name each and every President of the United States. Blake sees this is a unique opportunity. To be honest with you, I recently spoke to him and he is out-of-his-mind excited.
Taking Blake to momentous occasions is important to me because growing up, my mother and father took my brother and me around the world at a very young age. The learning experiences I garnered from those trips was so much more than I would have learned in a classroom.
This is my mother's second inauguration and while she says she is somewhat dubious because of the expected 1.5 million spectators, mark my word, she will be leading the way throughout the trip. She's a trooper!
Our tentative plans are as follows:
- Dinner in DC Monday evening at the Capital Q restaurant - great food!
- Breakfast at the Waffle Shop at 5 am for historic George Washington Waffles! Really, it was George Washington's favorite meal. Located downtown DC 10th Street.
- Early morning on the 20th on the Metro into DC for the swearing in ceremony, followed by the parade, followed by lunch downtown with a tour for Blake thru DC.
We are scheduled to take the 4:30 am Metro (Green line) on Tuesday morning as we need to be in our seated section no later than 9 am. We have pre-purchased our commemorative Obama Metro Cards (see the link) and will enjoy post inauguration activities in the DC area on Wednesday the 21st.
Looking forward to keeping you in touch with DC. Go Aztecs!

Commemorative Metro Cards! Are those only for the 20th?
ReplyDeleteYou have flexibility depending the card you choose. Check out that Metro website and read through the various metro cards.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to hear what Blake has to say about his whole experience next week. He's a very lucky 5th grader!
